Never underestimate the value of what a fresh coat of paint can do for a home’s exterior, or how much it can bring an interior area to life.   There are few projects around the house which will allow a homeowner to express themselves more than in one’s selection of paint color. 
 
Although it may seem like an easy project, painting is a job best left to the professionals.  There are many “tricks of the trade” when painting, that the average homeowner may know nothing about.  Proper preparation before painting (cleaning, scraping, wood repair, etc) is the most important aspect to quality painting.  Typically, the prep work will take longer than the actual application of paint. 
 
In addition to the above, choosing the correct sheen as well as color choices will also make a world of difference.  Most reputable painting contractors will allow you to get a sample of your color choice first, to assure you are confident in your selections. 
 
You should not have to make a payment to a painting contractor before the job is started.  Remember when comparing painting contractors, as the majority of the job cost is in labor, it is not accurate to try to compare only prices “apples to apples.”  You will usually get the quality that you pay for.  Talk to the contractor in detail about the quality and scope of work in which you expect
